SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,927, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed May 21, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EssE ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement is more particularly related to the open-fire grate or Franklin'stove.
The object of the improvement is to place the draft of the stove more directly under control, increase its heating capacity, and at the same time to furnish a suitable and useful support to the blower, which for this purpose is made capable of application either as a blower or a draftrregulator.
It has long been an objection to the opengrate stove that the blower, when not in use as such, was inconveniently in the way, forming an unsightly and dangerous object alongside of the stove, and disfiguring the appearance of the latter when left upon the hearth of the same.
The accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, shows my mode of overcoming the above objectionable features, similar letters of reference indicating similar parts.
Figure 1 represents in full front perspective elevation an open-fire stove adapted to my improvement. detached from the stove, showing the handle and registerof the same. vation showing theblowerin combination with the upper bar of the grate and with'the lower edge of the fire'hood, Fig. 4, a full front perspective elevation showing the blower resting upon the ash-plate E and closing the lower exposed portion of the grate, in which position it regulates the access of air to the fuel by the register in the blowerr To adapt the open or Franklin grate stove to my improvement I throw from the body or face A of the frame a hood, B, conforming at its rear with the opening in the same, and with Fig. 2 represents the blower Fig. 3 is a side ele.

toward the rear at the top.) The register F permits the entrance of atmospheric air when soft coal is burned, thus preventing smoke. The hood B, projectingoutward into the room, radiates more heat into the same, and is therefore better adapted to warm the apartment in which it is located than the open-grate stoves as usually constructed. The arrangement of the blower F and ashplate E are such relative to the lower portion, G, of the fire-grate that when the blower is lifted off of the grate top bar and placed upon the ash-plate the inner top edge of the same shall closely contact with the bars G and cut off the access of air to the fuel and the fire may be kept in a state of slow combustion, or may be given sufficient air for a moderate rate of combustion,by operating theregister F.
It will be seen that my improvement adds to the heating capacity of stoves of this class, and at the same time increases the economy of the same in the'control of the fire secured thereby. It also furnishes a suitable restingplace for the blower Without any danger of burning the carpet or furniture, the blower forming a component part of the stove.
Having described my improvement, its cona hood having its rear edge conformed to and connected with the top opening in the front of the stove, and horizontal lower or front and side edges parallel with and vertically above the upper bars of the grate, and a blower construoted with a register and adapted to close the space between the hood and grate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with an open front stove having a forwardlyeprojecting hood, ashplate, and grate, of a detachable blower, formed and adapted either to close the space between the hood and grate or to be placed upon the ash-plate to close the grate and cut off or limit the draft, substantially as set forth.
JESSE ORR.
