[Also in Group XIII] In a union for connecting together the inner and outer tubes 11, 15 of a heat exchanger, the tube 11 is provided with a fitting 45 having a stop flange 47 and a sealing surface 52, and the tube 15 has an inward stop flange 42 and a sealing surface 44, the flange 42 being engaged by the flange 47 upon movement towards the sealing surfaces of a clamping element, e.g. a nut 54, surrounding a projecting portion 53 of the fitting 45. A gasket 55 preferably of soft iron is sealed against the surfaces 44, 52 which may be conical. The nut 54 and the gasket 55 are removable so that the tube 11 can be withdrawn from the tube 15. A pipe 20 which may be connected to the fitting 45 is provided with a flange 58 behind which is engaged a ring 63 connected by, bolts 64 to a ring 62 between which and a flange 56 of the fitting is disposed a split ring 60, a gasket 59 being interposed between the flanges 56, 58. In modifications, the clamping element is in the form of a ring surrounding a plain projecting portion 53 and moved into engagement with the gasket 55 by a series of screws disposed on a diameter smaller than that of the gasket, (b) the projecting portion 53 is threaded throughout its length, a nut having an inward flange engaging behind the flange 58 of the pipe 20 being screwed onto the portion 53, (c) the ring 62 is dispensed with and the bolts 64 passing through a ring forming the clamping member are screwed into the flange 42 of the tube 15, and a further series of bolts also passing through the clamping member and screwed into the fitting 45 are disposed within the diameter of the gasket 55, and (d) the pipe 20 is damped against the end of the portion 53 by the ring 63, the bolts 64 being screwed into the nut 54.
