Abstract

618,236. Pipe joints. HOBBS, J. C. Aug. 2, 1945, No. 19878. Convention date, June 15, 1943. [Class 99 (i)] In a pressure-sealing joint for pipes and the like in which the pipe 3 is to be joined to a high - pressure valve body 1, the pipe has an enlarged end formed by attaching a ring 5 by means of weld metal 6, or otherwise, the enlarged end having an inclined surface as shown which is contacted by a deformable packing 8 maintained in sealing engagement with it and the side wall of the recess by means of the ring 7 and a member 9 which screws into the body 1. High pressure fluid in the joint tends to move the pipe axially and thus compress the packing into firmer engagement with the pipe and the recess. In a modification, the gland nut 9 is replaced by a member which has an annular part which compresses the packing and is provided with flanges bolted to the body.
