Abstract

707,250. Speed governors. C.A.V., Ltd. July 10, 1952 [July 11, 1951], No. 16409/51. Class 57 A diaphragm or piston b connected to the control rack a of a fuel-injection pump is subjected to pressure in the chamber c connected by pipe d to the engine side of a manually-actuated throttle f in the air manifold e. A cylinder g is connected by pipe p to the intake side of the throttle f and is also in communication, through ports j, controlled by the valve i, with the chamber c. The valve i is loaded by a light spring m engaging an abutment n, having through passages and loaded by a stronger spring o. At low speeds, when the throttle is closed, the diaphragm abuts and opens the valve i against the light spring m to permit atmospheric pressure to bleed into the chamber c and stabilize the action of the governor. At high engine speeds under light load, when the throttle is open, the diaphragm moves the valve into contact with the abutment n and damping is effected by the strong spring o, the atmospheric bleed being ineffective when the throttle is open. The pipe p may be provided with a rotary valve movable by the throttle as described in Specification 697,806. Specification 653,586 also is referred to.
