Abstract

In a governor for a fuel injection pump of an internal-combustion engine in which a diaphragm or piston c loaded by a spring f is connected to the pump control rod g and subjected through pipe i to the pressure in the engine airintake manifold h, a stabilizing air buffer d is connected by a spring e to the diaphragm or piston and a valve is provided whereby the buffer can be rendered ineffective. The buffer piston d is slidable in a cylinder a and, in the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the valve is a rotary plug valve k that co-operates with a port in the cylinder a and is connected through the accelerator pedal m with the throttle n. The valve is open to atmosphere during normal running and closed only when the engine is running slowly under a light load. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the valve consists of a plug o slidable in a cylinder p open at one end to atmosphere and connected at the other end by a pipe q to the inlet end of the manifold h, the valve being closed when the engine is running slowly and opened at higher engine speeds by the reduced pressure in the manifold. In a further modification. Fig. 3 (not shown), the valve consists of a flexible diaphragm cooperating with a port in the cylinder a and contained in a compartment in the governor chamber body b, one side of the compartment being connected to the inlet end of the manifold and the other side communicating with the interior of the body b.
