Abstract

1370743 Regulating I C engines fuel injection pumps NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd 2 Oct 1972 [2 Oct 1971] 45307/72 Heading F1B A pneumatic speed governor, for an I. C. engine having a fuel injection pump comprising a first chamber and further chamber separated by a diaphragm, the first chamber being connectible to an intake manifold of an engine and the diaphragm being connectible to the fuel pump regulating rod, so that the position of the rod depends on the pressure in the first chamber, the further chamber being connected to atmosphere by a bore for throttling expulsion of air from the chamber and by way of a check-valve in parallel with the bore and opening into the further chambers. The fuel pump 1 has a regulating rod 3 which is fixed to a rod 6 attached to a diaphragm 4 which divides a housing 2' into a vacuum chamber 2 and an atmospheric chamber 12. The vacuum chamber 2 is connected by a pipe 10 to a Venturi in the intake pipe of an I. C. engine, and the effect on the diaphragm of the vacuum produced in the chamber is opposed by a spring 5. The chamber 12 is permanently connected to atmosphere by a small-diameter bore 7 and also by a check-valve 8 which opens to admit air to the chamber. The governor prevents black smoke appearing in the vehicle exhaust when it is suddenly accelerated because the small bore 7 limits the rate at which the diaphragm can move to the left in Fig. 1 by throttling the escape of air, movement of the diaphragm and rod 3 to the left resulting in an increased quantity of fuel being delivered to the engine.
