Abstract

732,187. Speed governors. C.A.V., Ltd. May 21, 1954 [June 1, 1953], No. 15175/53. Class 57. A pneumatic governor responsive to the pressure in the air-intake passage g of a reciprocatory internal combustion, engine, for controlling the output of a liquid-fuel injection pump a, and having an air-bleed device to stabilize, or prevent flutter of the governor when the pump is in or near the condition of minimum delivery is provided with a valve responsive to the pressure of the air from an engine blower j for over-riding the action of the governor stabilizing means. The governor consists of a flexible diaphragm d (or piston) which is connected to one end of the pump control rod b, loaded by a spring e and arranged to divide a hollow body part c into two chambers, one of these chambers being open to the atmosphere while the other is connected by a pipe f to the passage g at a position associated with the throttle i or between the throttle and the blower j. The air-bleed device includes a spring-loaded valve q having a stem u which causes it to be opened when the diaphragm d is displaced to the right, with increasing engine speed so that atmospheric air may enter the governor through a port o and an annular valve seating p. If the engine is running above a predetermined speed however the pressure of the air from the blower acts through a pipe r on a spring-leaded piston m (or flexible diaphragm) which closes the valve seating p and thus renders the air-bleed device inoperative.
