Abstract

1323880 Timing ignition JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 27 Nov 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60188/69 Heading F1B [Also in Division H1] The operation of a vacuum unit 18 for varying the ignition timing of a distributor is controlled by a valve 44. Valve 44 is operated automatically, for example in response to the pressure in the inlet manifold 42 of the engine, to occupy two positions. When the engine is inoperative, the pressure in manifold 42 is atmospheric, valve 44 in its first position, chambers 21, 22 in unit 18 are at atmospheric pressure and diaphragm 23 in unit 18 is at is rest position. When the engine is idling and throttle valve 38 closed, pressure in manifold 42 drops, valve 44 moves to its second position to subject chamber 21 to the manifold pressure and to open chamber 22 to atmosphere. During normal operation of the engine, throttle valve 38 is open, the pressure in manifold 42 rises and valve 44 is moved to its first position to open chamber 21 to atmosphere and to subject chamber 22 to the pressure of the air inlet side of the throttle valve 38. In an overrun condition when the engine is loaded and valve 38 closed, valve 44 moves to its second position. Unit 18 is adjustably mounted on the casing 11 of the distributor, so that the ignition timing can be adjusted manually.
