Abstract

1358797 Ventilating crank-cases;treating charge FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 27 Jan 1972 [31 March 1971] 3912/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] In an I.C. engine having a ventilated crankcase and an intake manifold a valve provides a variable restriction in a passage between the crank-case and the intake manifold in response to intake manifold pressure, the response of the valve being delayed upon a sudden change in intake manifold pressure. Crank-case gases pass via port 27, orifice 29 and port 28 to a line (20) Fig. 3 (not shown) leading to the inlet manifold. The orifice 29 is controlled by a tapered plunger 31 moved by a diaphragm 36 acted on by ambient pressure in chamber 34 and inlet manifold vacuum in chamber 33 communicated to port 39 from line (20). At low speeds the plunger 31 is positioned to restrict the flow of crank-case gases and as engine speed increases with consequent decrease of inlet manifold vacuum the plunger 31 is moved to permit full gas flow. On sudden acceleration from a low speed the decrease in the inlet manifold vacuum causes a valve element 54 to seat on surface 51 to delay the equalization of pressures in manifold 19 and compartment 34. Thus the onset of full gas flow through orifice 29 is delayed during acceleration.
