Abstract
1387425 Timing ignition JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 9 June 1972 [2 July 1971] 31079/71 Heading F1B A vacuum operable unit for use with an internal combustion engine ignition distributer includes a hollow casing 11 divided into first and second chambers 14, 15 by a flexible diaphragm 12 a pushrod 13 coupled at one end to the diaphragm so as to move therewith and arranged at its other end to be coupled to the timing plate of an ignition distributer (not shown), the rod extending through the wall of the first chamber and sealing means 16 engaging the wall of the first chamber and the rod to seal the chamber while permitting movement of the rod, first resilient means 17 within the first chamber and engageable by the diaphragm during movement of the diaphragm in a direction to reduce the volume of the first chamber, second resilient means 18 within the second chamber and engageable by the diaphragm during movement of the diaphragm in a direction to reduce the volume of the second chamber and first and second abutments 22, 23 carried by the casing and engageable by the first and second resilient means in a central position of the diaphragm so that in the central position of the diaphragm neither of the first and second resilient means acts on the diaphragm. The grub screw 26 is adjustable from the exterior of the unit by way a sealable aperture 27 in the casing. The conduits 29, 31 may be coupled to a valve which is operated in accordance with the position of the engine throttle valve. When the throttle valve is closed the chamber 15 is opened to atmosphere and the valve connects the chamber 14 to the inlet manifold downstream of the throttle. The diaphragm 12 will be moved to the left to retard the ignition timing.
