Abstract

A vacuum operable unit 11 for use with an ignition distributer (not shown) includes a casing 12 a diaphram 13 dividing the casing into first and second chambers 14, 15, a plunger 21 slidably received in the first chamber, the plunger being secured at one end to the diaphram and extending at its other end from the first chamber for connection to the distributer so that axial movement of the plunger varies the ignition timing of the distributer, a vent in the wall of the first chamber opening the first chamber to atmosphere, a conduit 18 communicating with the second chamber and through which vacuum can be applied to the second chamber and a spring arrangement 34, 35 urging the diaphram from a first position wherein in use the ignition timing of the distributer is advanced to a second position wherein the ignition timing of the distributer is in a minimum advance position for normal operation and capable of urging the diaphram from the second position to a third position wherein the ignition timing of the distributer is retarded beyond the minimum advance position when opposite sides of the diaphram are subjected to equal pressures. The unit is associated with a two position valve (not shown) operated in response to movement of an engine throttle pedal.
