Abstract
1362420 Timing ignition DUCELLIER & CIE 8 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 51769/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division H1] In a double-action vacuum advance capsule 2 for an ignition distributor for an internal combustion engine, two resilient members 12, 18 act independently of each other against the vacuum in the chambers 6 and 5 respectively and also bring diaphragm 7 into a rest position, the rest position being adjustable and the force of members 12, 18 being adjustable independently of each other. If a vacuum is drawn in chamber 5, diaphragm 7 moves in the direction of arrow F1 and its movement is resisted by spring 18 being compressed between the head 19 of plunger 11 attached to diaphragm 7 and the bottom 13a of cup-shaped element 13 engaging flange 15a of ring 15. The force of spring 18 is adjusted by screwing plunger 11 in or out of traction rod 9 secured between diaphragm 7 and the distributor plate (not shown). If a vacuum is drawn in chamber 6, diaphragm 7 moves in the direction of arrow F2 and its movement is resisted by spring 12 being compressed between the bottom 13a of element 13 and cavity 16 of support member 17. The force of spring 12 is adjusted by screwing member 17 in or out of sleeve 20. The rest position of diaphragm 7, when chambers 5, 6 are at atmospheric pressure, as shown in Fig. 1, is adjusted by screwing in or out ring 15 in sleeve 20. With the above, an advance, curve L2, and a retard, curve L1, of the moment of sparking as a function of vacuum and speed of the engine can be obtained as shown in Fig. 4. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the two springs are inside the distributor housing and are connected between the wall of the housing and two pivoted levers 39 and 44 which both act on the end of the traction rod 35 joined to the diaphragm 30, each spring 37, 42 coming into action on diaphragm 30 moving in different directions and being taken out of action by a stop 40 against which levers 39, 44 rest in the opposite directions. Stop 40 is adjustable e.g. an eccentric, and springs 37, 42 are fastened to casing 1 by members 38, 43 which are adjustable. A third embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) is as the second embodiment except that the end of the traction rod is not linked to the distributor plate but to a lever 49 linked to arm 46 of the interrupter 47.
