Abstract

689,576. Regulating. C.A.V., Ltd. Jan. 11, 1951 [Jan. 11, 1950], No. 713/50. Class 7 (vi) [Also in Group XXIX] The fuel-air ratio of an internal combustion engine supplied with liquid fuel by a variable delivery injection pump wand with air through a. throttle - controlled manifold f is maintained at a preselected value by means comprising a member such as the diaphragm b for actuating the throttle e, a valve j for controlling the application of different gas pressures to the opposite sides of the member, manually operable mechanism for actuating the valve and also the pump output controlling means, and means such as the diaphragm o responsive to a difference of gas pressures one of which is the air pressure on the engine side of the throttle for restoring the valve j to its neutral position after manual operation thereof. As shown, a manually operable lever u acts on the pump output control control means through a link v and on a spring s loading the diaphragm o through a cam and a thrust piece t. The diaphragm b acts on the throttle e through a thrust piece c and a lever d against a spring. Passages h, i leading to opposite sides of the diaphragm b are controlled by the valve j which is formed as a hollow piston with ports r near its base opening into a chamber containing a balancing spring q. This chamber is open to the atmosphere or is connected to the engine exhaust. The chamber containing the spring s is connected by a pipe n to the manifold f on the engine side of the throttle e. The pipe n is connected by a passage m to a cylinder k in which the valve j slides. The diaphragms b, o may be replaced by pistons. In a modification, the valve j is also actuated by a temperature-responsive device comprising an air or gas filled elastic capsule which replaces the spring q.
