Abstract

688,887. Projectile fuzes. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. July 20. 1951 [July 31, 1950], No. 17271/51. Class 9(i) An impact fuze for a rocket projectile has a body 1 adapted to be screwed into the nose.of the projectile and is attached by screw-threading to a primer carrier 7. In a longitudinal bore is a spring-held striker pin 2 with a stepped head 3 of hard material, e.g. tungsten carbide. The striker pin 2 is itself bored to receive a sleeve 5 into which extends a percussion pin 8. An inclined bore in the striker pin extends to the sleeve and accommodates a ball 6. Before impact the percussion pin 8 is prevented by a transverse safety pin 9 from entering the primer 11, and if at impact the velocity of the projectile is low, the striker pin moves too slowly to affect the percussion pin. So that, the striker pin returns to its initial position with the fuze unaffected by the impact. If the striker pin bears against a plug 10 any further pressure on the pin will rupture the fuze body at a weakening 1a and render ignition impossible. If the projectile strikes. a target at high speed; the pin 2 is thrown rearwards at high velocity while the ball 6 slides forwardly in the oblique bore and deforms the sleeve 5, Fig. 2. Then during further forward movement of the striker pin the deformation containing the ball 6 strikes against the percussion pin 8, the safety pin 9 is sheared and the primer 11 initiated.
