Abstract
1,204,693. Projectile fuzes. OERLIKONBUHRLE HOLDING A.G. 4 Oct., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 45264/67. Heading F3A. A device for use in a projectile percussion fuze comprises an axially slidable pin 11, a cap 19 for forming the tip of the projectile having a cavity open at the front into which the pin extends, and a fusible body 17 preventing the pin from sliding forwards in the cavity, the front surface of the fusible body being exposed to air flow on discharge of the projectile, and at least one passage arranged partly in the fusible body and partly in the cap for leading away the air-flow from in front of the fusible body. The fusible body is in the form of an annular ring which may be solid, or perforated or provided with grooves 23 to lead the air away. The cap is also provided with grooves 28 or perforations. Rearward movement of the slidable pin 11 is prevented by a flange 10 which shears off on impact of the projectile. The device can be used with a percussion fuze as described in U.S. Specification 3,007,412. In the fuze a firing pin is connected to flyweights by arms pivotally attached to the pin. The tip of the pin extends into a spherical rotor carrying a detonator. After the fusible body 17 is melted by the air flow, the firing pin is pulled forwards by centrifugal force acting on the flyweights and the rotor is rotated by centrifugal force to align the detonator with the firing pin. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 888,579.
