Abstract

730,323. Projectile fuzes. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Feb. 19, 1953 [March 17, 1952], No. 4661/53. Class 9(1). Fuze for projectiles fired from air into water has a domed cap 1 seated on a flange 2 of the two-part tube 3, 4 closed by a member 5 from which projects two coaxial sleeves 6, 7. The flange 2, tube part 4 and sleeve 7 may be formed in one piece. The annular chamber within the cap surrounding the sleeve 7 and tube 4 communicates with the exterior of the fuze through a passage 9 which has a groove 10 to receive a protective plate. Alternatively a plug may be screwed into the passage. Leading from the chamber towards the rear of the projectile is a channel or channels 11. A sealing disc 12, preferably of phosphor bronze, is held in the sleeve 7 by a closure plate 13 through which extend holes 14, 15. Extending through the member 5 is a rod 16 held in position by a transverse pin 17 and provided with a conical part 8 engaged in a conical liner 19 of the sleeve 6. The liner 19 may be of lead or may be omitted, the internal surface of the sleeve 6 theu being given a conical shape. To the rod 18 is secured a plate 20 with diameter approaching the internal diameter of the sleeve 7. In use, the protective plate is removed immediately before firing the projectile. As the projectile passes from air into water, the air in the annular chamber is pushed out through channels 11 by water entering the passage 9. Hydrostatic pressure on plate 20 through openings 14, 15 forces the rod 16 inwards shearing the pin 17 and rupturing the disc 12, the parts 18, 19 being brought into engagement to prevent water entering the projectile. Instead of the shear pin 17 the rod may be held by a spring. Specification 730,324 is referred to.
