687,958. Stuffing-box packing. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., KILLNER, F. E., and MORRIS, A. K. Sept. 20, 1951 [June 26, 1950], No. 15916/50. Class 122(v) A plunger 7 slidable in a high pressure chamber 1 is sealed by resilient packing 19 laterally enclosed between the plunger and the smaller bore 10 of a stepped recess in an end wall of the chamber and axially compressed therein by a differential piston 13 mounted in the stepped bore so that its larger end 14 is subjected to the chamber pressure and its smaller end 15 bears on the packing 19 thereby inducing in the packing a pressure greater than that prevailing in the chamber, the space between the steps in the piston and the bore being vented by a duct 12. The chamber end wall is formed by a closure plug 2 sealed by a rubber ring 5 compressed between the plug and a backing ring 4 which also supports the differential piston 13 and has a bore 6 therein to admit pressure fluid to the piston.
