Abstract
584,569. Piston packing ; stuffing-box packing. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., RIBBESFORD CO., Ltd., and THORNHILL, P. W. Jan. 2, 1945, No. 178. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A sealing ring 35 is subjected to radial fluid pressure via passage 44 from the chamber 41 which is separated from the contained fluid at 16 in the cylinder 10 by a piston or equivalent 37, the pressure in the chamber 41 varying with but being greater than the pressure of the contained fluid at 16. The piston or equivalent 37 may be shaped with a larger area 40 exposed to the contained fluid at 16 than to fluid in chamber 41 or alternatively, as shown in Fig. 4, a spring 61 acts axially on the piston equivalent 60 to give the greater pressure on fluid in chamber 59. In Fig. 4, the sealing ring 55 is located in a groove 56 formed in the inturned, possibly stepped, wall 57 of the cylinder 10. The sealing ring may be mounted on the plunger instead of the cylinder, in which case it is urged outwardly by fluid pressure on to the cylinder wall.
