Abstract
653,957. Stuffing-box substitutes. TATE & LYLE, Ltd., and YETMAN, J. F. June 8, 1949, No. 15239. [Class 122(v)] A seal for a rotary shaft 2 comprises a sleeve 3 surrounding the shaft and entering a stuffing-box 4 and having on a tapered sealing surface 5 a sealing ring 6 forced by fluid pressure into contact with the wall 7 of the stuffing-box. The other end of the sleeve 3 is threaded and carries a plate 8 supported by studs 10 projecting from the box A. The plate 8 is pressed outwardly by springs 13 and an adjustable stop is provided by collars 14 and nuts 15. Secured to the sleeve 3 by a cap 16 is a packing ring 17 which may be in two halves, which is pressed into contact with a tapered surface 18 on the shaft 2 by the springs 13 and the fluid pressure acting on the sleeve 3. The Specification also describes a modification for use in sealing a vacuum against atmospheric pressure.
