504,063. Piston packing; stuffing- box packing. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., RIBBESFORD CO., Ltd., and THORNHILL, P. W. Feb. 15, 1938, No. 4755. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] An elastic packing ring 14 of non - circular cross - section is twisted through a right-angle to engage a groove in one of the members to be sealed whereby it bears resiliently on both members. The groove may be of shallower depth or rounded at one end in order to compress the end of the ring radially. The groove may be formed in the piston of a shock absorber or in the cylinder wall or may surround a part in one of a pair of flat sliding surfaces.
