674,455. Variable-speed gearing. HURET, A. M., HURET; R. H., and HURET, J. A. May 1, 1950 [Oct. 22, 1949], No. 10650/50. Class 80 (ii). In a chain shifting variable speed gear for cycles and the like a supporting arm 1 carrying the tensioning arm 2 with tensioning and chain shifting rollers 6, 5 is mounted upon a bolt 7 engaged in the slot 9 of the frame lug 10 and has a forked portion 11 which fits over the wheel spindle 12. When the wheel spindle is removed the arm 1 can rotate about the bolt 7 to the position shown dotted as allowed by a key and slot device 16, 17. For shifting the chain the arm 2 is adapted to move along a spindle 3 secured to the arm 1 against a spring 4 which also serves to tension the chain. This tension can be adjusted by rotation of a member 19 to which one end of the spring is secured and which can be locked by a pin 21 engaging in one of a number of holes 20.
