751,390. Variable-speed gearing. JUY, L. C. H. March 10, 1954 [May 19, 1953], No. 6986/54. Class 80(2) In change speed gearing for bicycles in which a chain 2 is engaged with any one of a number of wheels 3 by moving a chain-wheel 7 axially, hook means is provided to enable any gear ratio to be engaged if the operating cable 1 should break. The wheel 7 is acted upon by spring pressure opposing the pull in the cable 1. As shown, a hook with a slot 8<SP>1</SP> is formed on a washer 8 fixed between the carrier arm 11 and a striated member 12. If the cable 1 breaks the small chain 4 at the end of the cable is pulled manually and engaged with the hook so that the gear ratio desired is established. The hook may be formed on the arm 11 or member 12 or formed in the end nut 19 or to a member secured thereto. The hook may be adjustable. In a modification the cable end 13, Fig. 12, has spaced projections 14 one of which may engage a fixed slotted hook 22.
