Abstract

695,961. Variable-speed gearing. STURMEY ARCHER GEARS, Ltd. July 17, 1951 [July 17, 1950], No. 17804/50. Class 80 (ii). A chain shift change - speed gear for cycles and the like has three driven sprockets 1-3 on the rear hub and a supporting arm 9 pivoted about an axis 18 and mounted on a supporting plate 8. In the operative position means are provided for locating and retaining the arm. The guide assembly consists of idler sprockets 13, 14, and guide plates 15, 16 mounted on a plate 12. A guide sleeve 10 mounted on the forward end of the supporting arm 9 passes through a hole in the arm and is held by nuts 22, 23. A hollow spindle 11 fixed to the guide assembly is free to slide in the guide sleeve. The flexible tension lead 27 passes through the sleeve and hollow spindle and is held by a screw 27a to a pin 24. A spring 28 tensions the chain and returns the guide assembly. The movement of the hollow spindle is limited by an external shoulder 32 engaging an internal shoulder 33 in the guide sleeve. A screwed rod 34 limits the movement in the opposite direction. To remove the rear wheel the normal wing nuts are slackened and the axle is moved slightly forwardly. The supporting arm is then dropped into an inoperative position taking the guide assembly with it. The ends of the axle 6 are then passed in a forward direction through horizontal slots 17 in the fork end plate 5. In a modification there is provided means for controlling the spring torsion and for limiting the movement of the hollow spindle.
