[Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed driving - mechanism for bicycles, of the type in which the chain is adapted to be selectively engaged by means of a movable sprocket with one of two or more sprockets of different diameters on the driven wheel, the movable sprocket is carried by a slide engaging a guide surface which is fixed to the cycle frame and is inclined with respect to the plane of the driven wheel in such a way as to move the sprocket laterally into the plane of the transmission sprocket to be engaged by the chain. The movable sprocket d is adjustably mounted by means of an arm r, a bolt f, and nuts g, h on a two-part slide e, which is moved by means of a cable n along a slotted guide plate a secured by means of a clamp b to the chain stay 5 and inclined as shown to effect the lateral movements of the sprocket. The slotted guide plate a is also inclined in a fore-and-aft direction, in order to vary simultaneously the distance of the sprocket d from the wheel axis and thereby facilitate engagement of the chain with a sprocket of different diameter. The chain is tensioned by means of a pulley j adjustably mounted on an arm i, which is pivoted to the slide e at m and is acted upon by a spiral spring l.
