Abstract

662,898. Storing gases. KIDDE CO., Ltd., W., and SPIDY, A. R. July 25, 1950 [July 25, 1949]. No. 19543/49. Class 8 (ii). Gas is released from a container 8 on retracting by a pull a member e.g., a ball 33 from a normally inoperative position, the member being so mounted as to be displaceable by a pull in almost any direction. The rupturably sealed end 9 of the container 8 is screwed to one end of an apertured casing 1 having an extension 5 in which is slidably mounted an upwardly biased plunger 16 having a spike 17 guided by a plug 11 and having a conically recessed head 20 forming a lower jaw which together with a fixed upper jaw 6 holds the ball 33. On pulling a chain 36 and withdrawing the ball the jaw 20 and hence the spike 17 becomes momentarily depressed, resulting in rupture of the seal 9 and discharge of the gas through a nipple 29 to an inflatable bag such as a lifejacket. Leakage is prevented by washers 21, 23, 24.
