Abstract

968,863. Storing gases. L. ROBY. Dec. 28, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1960], No. 44447/60. Heading F4P. [Also in Division B7] A triggering mechanism comprises a hollow body 5, a hammer head 6 mounted on a shank 9 adapted to move axially in the body, a first spring 8 acting to move the hammer head inwardly towards a striker pin 10, a trigger 16 acted upon by a second spring 18 to hold the hammer head in a retracted position in which the first spring 8 is compressed, a third spring 35 to disengage the trigger from the hammer head, and a band of paper 36 which when dry holds the third spring 35 from disengaging the trigger but which immediately loses its strength on contact with water to permit the third spring to disengage the trigger. The shank 9 projects from the body 5 and is provided with a ring 14 for retracting the hammer head. The striker pin 10 is spring loaded and is disposed within a chamber 11 which contains a member 20 having an annular recess 21 in communication with a discharge pipe 22 and, through ports 25, with a central bore 26. A gas cylinder 33 is connected by a screw-thread to the chamber 11, the cylinder having a puncturable closure seal. On release of the trigger the pin 10 punctures the seal, the pin then being retracted by its spring loading to allow the gas to escape through the pipe 22, e.g. for inflation of a life preserver. Specification 968,864 is referred to.
