Abstract
891,301. Gas storage vessels. KIDDE CO. Ltd., WALTER. Oct. 27, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 33523/57. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXIX] Release of compressed gas prematurely discharged from a life-jacket inflating cylinder 51, Fig. 3, by inadvertant opening of closure means, e.g. a pierceable disc 52, is effected through a cylindrical bore 61 in which slides a piston 62 normally held against a spring 63 by a cable-withdrawn pin 65 in such a position that a piston bore 66 registers with an atmospheric exhaust port 67 but when the pin is removed 114 registers with a port 68 axially spaced from port 67 and connected to the life jacket (not shown). The disc piercing pin 53 is carried at the lower end of a downwardly spring-biased sleeve held by balls 56 pushed into sleeve ports by a spindle 55 having at its upper end a disc subjected to upward displacement when water gains access to a sponge 57 resulting in expansion of the same and consequent release of the balls 56 and downward movement of the pin 53 under the action of spring 54. The balls 56 may be released manually by pulling an end cover 58. In a modification the closure means comprise a nylon valve 3, Fig. 1, which is normally unseated by a rod 6. When a bell crank 10, Fig. 2, thereof is lifted by a spring-biased rod 11 on solution of a retaining plug 16; a safety pin 22 having previously been removed to allow gas pressure to lift a piston 21 to a position whereby an annular groove 28 and longitudinal passage 27 register with an outlet connection 20. Gas prematurely discharged is exhausted to atmosphere through passage 27, groove 28 and outlet 19 covered by an easily breakable band 29. Specifications 891,300 and 891,303 are referred to.
