Abstract
710,196. Storing gases under pressure. SPARKLETS, Ltd., and ROUSSET, R. P. March 17, 1953 [Jan. 9, 1952], No. 715/52. Class 8 (2). A pin 30, Fig. 1, for puncturing a sealing cap of a compressed gas container (not shown) is located in a bore 2 of a housing 1 adapted to receive the container neck and is forced towards the cap by a piston 25 slidably mounted in the bore 2 and positively displaced in both the forward and return directions by toggle means; the pin 30 being retracted from the punctured cap by the gas pressure and a return spring 33. The toggle means comprises a lever 36, Fig. 2, pivoted about a pin 38 fixed to the housing 1 and a lever 37 pivoted at one end to a pin 40 carried by the slotted end of the lever 36 and pivoted at the other end to a pin 41 carried by the rear slotted end of the piston 25. In operation and on pulling a cord 44 secured to the lever 36, the pin 40 first assumes a position in line with pins 38, 41 whereon the piston 25 and the pin 30 against which it bears are displaced forwardly to pierce the cap, and then assumes the over-centre position whereon the piston 25 is retracted followed by the pin 30. The discharged gas traverses a cross-bore 4 and a non-return valve 12 and serves to inflate a life-saving jacket or the like.
