Abstract
953,263. Firing devices for underwater explosives. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. April 25, 1962 [April 25, 1961], No. 15728/62. Heading B7A. An initiator, primarily intended for use under water, comprises a piston 6, a metal spring striker 8 and a unit 5 which houses an ignition charge 15, a primer charge 17, a base charge 18 and at its inner end an anvil 22 and percussion cap 13. The piston 6 is moved against the action of a compression spring 10 by external pressure whereby the striker 8 is flexed against an arrester 9. Continued flexing of the striker causes it to assume a configuration whereby it snaps off the arrester 9 to impinge permissively on the cap 13. The pressure required for initiation is varied by a collar 11 movable axially against the lower end of spring 10. Tool holes 12 and an access aperture 2 may be provided as also may a safety pin 20. For use at low pressures, sealing ring 23 is used and outer shell 1 is sealed, i.e. aperture 2 is omitted, or suitably plugged. For use at high pressures, sealing ring 23 is omitted, thereby making the effective cross-sectional area of piston 6 that of tube 3. To test the device a dummy unit 5, having a percussion cap 13 only, may be used. Two detailed examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 3,095,815 is referred to.
