Abstract
1,179,521. Life-saving appliance. N. K. GALLOWAY. 7 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 1968], No. 1177/68. Heading B7U. A buoyant life-saving device comprises a buoyant body containing a battery connected through a switch 18 to an external lamp 14, and an inflatable body 8 connected to a compressed gas bottle 11 via a valve 10 closed by a watersoluble element, a wall 7 of the buoyant body being displaceable by the inflatable body. The buoyant body is of expanded polystyrene and comprises complementary portions with mating recesses forming internal cavities 3, 4, 6 for battery, radio and bottle. Switch 18 is held open by a projection (22, Fig. 4, not shown) on a holder (20, 20<SP>1</SP>) when the device is stored. A portion (21) on the holder excludes water from the soluble element during storage. When the device is dismounted from the holder and thrown into the water, switch 18 closes and lights lamp 14, the soluble element dissolves and inflatable body 8 inflates, displaces wall 7 and leaves the buoyant body but remains attached by hose 9.
