Abstract

1,172,691. Generating hydrogen. HELLIER AIRBORNE Ltd. 6 April, 1967 [6 Jan., 1966; 22 Nov., 1966], Nos. 709/66 and 52189/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B7] A balloon device for use example for rescue work at sea comprises receptacle 19 which includes expandable envelope 20 enclosing expandable spring 16, at least one water inlet passage 30 giving passage for water past flexible flap 24 and through passage 25 to a substance 15, 21 capable of generating gas by reaction with water, and balloon 22 which is expanded by the gas produced in the envelope 20. The gas generating substance may be sodium borohydride with cobalt chloride as catalyst, or lithium hydride, sodium hydride in oil, calcium hydride or lithium borohydride. Before use, deflated envelope 20, compressed spring 16 and deflated balloon 22 are enclosed in container (17) (Fig. 1 not shown). When lid (13) is removed the spring expands and water is drawn into the envelope. When the envelope is fully expanded cord 26 pulls plug 5 from the nozzle connecting the envelope and the balloon and gas flows into the balloon through one-way valve 23. A water-soluble seal 18 dissolves to free the balloon.
