Abstract

731,584. Lifesaving appliances. DAOUST, A. H. Oct. 9, 1953, No. 27783/53. Class 77. A lifesaving appliance in which an inflatable collapsed or folded member is automatically inflated comprises a container secured to a waist belt 2 and within which the inflatable member 5 is folded and a separate chamber within the container for accommodating a compressed gas filled cartridge 9 which when punctured at its sealed end 10<SP>1</SP> inflates the member. The outer side face of the container is provided with a hinged cover 4 adapted to open under the pressure of the expanding member 5. The cartridge chamber is provided with a screw cap 12 for cartridge renewable purposes and with a cartridge supporting partition 11. A rubber self-sealing diaphragm 13 is also provided so that on puncturing of the cartridge end 101 the gas is prevented from escaping from the chamber other than through a non-return valve 20 which leads to the member 5, the open end of the latter being secured to the rectangular perimeter of the chamber wall 7. The puncturing of cartridge end 10<SP>1</SP> is effected by a pointed member 19 fixed to a lever 15 of curved elongated strip which is secured to the lower face 16 of the container and is bowed out therefrom.
