Abstract

1498059 Respiratory appliances A S LAERDAL 19 May 1975 [22 May 1974] 21232/75 Heading A5T Respiration apparatus comprises a manually compressible bag 1 of resilient material connected to a mask (3) via a non-return valve (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), a non-return inlet valve (4) having an annular membrane 7 located on a generally annular part 6 and connected by a hose 11 to a supply of compressed oxygen (12), a first pressure relief valve having a membrane 21, orifices 24, 26 and opening above a selected pressure for outflow of oxygen, a second pressure relief valve having a membrane 22, orifices 28, and opening below a selected pressure for inflow of air, and a foldable bag 19 which indicates by its degree of inflation the pressure level at the relief valves. In operation the bag 1 is squeezed to provide respiration, drawing oxygen in through the inlet valve. If however the pressure becomes greater or less than a selected range the relief valves will operate to release oxygen or admit air. Bag 19 is taut when there is a 100% oxygen supply but collapses on expansion of bag 1 if air is being admitted by the second pressure relief valve. The two pressure relief valves may alternatively be accommodated in a separate housing or. in the wall of bag 19. The bag 19 has at least the volume of bag 1.
