Abstract
911,026. Respiratory appliances. DRAGER, O. H., [trading as DRAGERWERK, H. & B. DRAGER]. Jan. 24, 1961 [Jan. 25, 1960], No. 2836/61. Class 81 (2). In underwater breathing-apparatus inhalation gas is supplied to the user at a pressure greater than the ambient pressure on his chest but exhalation takes place against a pressure lower than the pressure on his chest. A mouthpiece I is connected by an exhalation pipe 10 through a valve 2 and carbon dioxide absorber 3 to an expansible chamber 4 and by a pipe 11 through a valve 7 to a similar chamber 6. The chamber 4 is mounted higher than the user's chest so as to be subjected to a lower ambient pressure, while chamber 6 is situated below the chest. Consequently inhalation takes place from the higher pressure chamber 6 while exhalation is into the lower pressure chamber 4 and the air is continuously passed back from the latter to the former by a motor-driven pump 5. Opening and closing of the valves 2, 7 are performed by suitable pressure-sensitive diaphragms. In a modification, the expansible chambers are mounted adjacent each other but are loaded by springs to give the desired result.
