Abstract
913,950. Respiratory apparatus. SVENSKA A.B. GASACCUMULATOR. Feb. 15, 1961 [Feb. 18, 1960], No. 5606/61. Class 81 (2). Breathing apparatus for use under water or in noxious atmospheres comprises a membraneoperated inhalation valve 5, the valve and the membrane 9 being associated with separate chambers 15, 16 which communicate with a mask or mouthpiece 1 so that air entering the mask or mouthpiece from the inhalation valve has an injector effect, causing a sub-pressure in air in the membrane chamber 16, a direct connection 17 between the chambers being provided to counteract the injector effect. The chambers 15, 16 are separated by a partition 14, an aperture 17 in the partition permitting air to pass into the membrane chamber from the inhalation valve. The injector effect on air in the membrane chamber by air supplied to the mouthpiece 1 from the inhalation valve chamber 15 is counteracted by the passage of gas through the aperture so that the sub-pressure acting on the membrane to keep the inhalation valve open during inhalation is maintained substantially constant independent of the rate at which gas passes to the mouthpiece. The membrane is exposed to the ambient atmosphere or water on one side and carries an exhalation valve 12. The valve stem 7 of the inhalation valve is. spring loaded in the direction of opening to counteract the closing pressure exerted by gas flairing towards the inhalation valve.
