Abstract
1,092,818. Respiratory apparatus. O. H. DRAGER, [trading as DRAGERWERK, HEINR. & BERNH. DRAGER], Jan. 15, 1965 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 2020/65. Heading A5T. An artificial respiratory apparatus comprises a device 1 for producing alternate positive and negative pressures to cause a person to respire, a valve 18, 21 for closing off device 1 from the lungs 20 when the pressure in the duct leading from the device 1 to the lungs falls below a predetermined value, and an adjustable means (not shown), e.g. a tension or compression spring, for acting on the valve to determine the predetermined value if this value is other than atmospheric pressure. For inhalation air or oxygen supplied through nozzle 4, passes to the lungs 20 via valve 9 and ducts 15, 19, valve 7 being closed. When the pressure in the change-over box 2 reaches a predetermined maximum, diaphragm 12 moves to the left closing valve 9 and valve 7 opens so that air from nozzle 4 withdraws air from the lungs and change-over box 2 and exhausts through valve 7. If the pressure in the duct leading to the lungs gets too low before the apparatus is changed over to supply air to the lungs, the diaphragm 18 is pressed against member 21 so that the lungs are not subjected to an undesirably low pressure. The valve for closing off the device 1 from the lungs may comprise a flexible tube or a chamber with one flexible wall.
