Abstract
1,029,177. Artificial respiration apparatus. AIR-SHIELDS, Inc. July 4, 1963, No. 26536/63. Heading A5T. Artificial respiration apparatus comprises a bellows 9 for connection with the patient, a chamber 8 surrounding the bellows and supplied with gas under pressure under the control of a main valve 25, for effecting inspiration of the patient, a timer mechanism 28, for opening and closing the main valve, and an expiratory gas discharge valve 31 controlled by gas pressure under the control of the main valve so that it opens to permit the patient to exhale but closes during the inspiration part of the cycle. A face mask 5 is supplied with air from the bellows 9 through a conduit 4 in which a humidifying device 6 is arranged. The chamber 8 is supplied with compressed air by a fan 18b operated by a motor 18a through the main valve 25, a conduit 19 and a valve 20. The main valve is opened and closed cyclically by a solenoid under the control of the timer mechanism 28 when the valve 25 is open compressed air is supplied to the chamber 8 for a predetermined period and causes collapse of the bellows 9, air being supplied to the mask 5 through a valve 13 to induce inspiration. When the main valve is closed, air is vented from the chamber 8 through a valve 22 so that the bellows expands and atmospheric air is drawn into it through a filter 15 and a valve 17. While the bellows is expanding the expiratory valve 31 adjacent the mask opens so that the patient exhales. The vent valve 22 of the chamber 8 and the expiratory valve 31 are controlled by pressure chambers 24, 33 connected to the duct 19 downstream of the main valve so that they are closed when the main valve is open. When the main valve is closed, the pressure chambers are vented to atmosphere through the duct 19 and a duct 35 in the main valve. In the event that the patient makes a spontaneous inspirational effort during the expiration phase, pressure is reduced in a conduit 38 between a pressure-responsive device 37 and the patient's supply conduit 4 so that a plunger 40 operates a switch 41 in a lead 42 to the timer mechanism. This triggers the timer mechanism to the inspiration phase so that the main valve opens. Air delivered by the fan 18b passes over the motor 18a to the duct 19 and becomes warm. Some of the warm air is diverted at a point upstream of the main valve and supplied to a chamber 47 beneath the water chamber of the humidifying device 6.
