Abstract

1,212,529. Artificial respiration. F. M. BIRD and H. L. POHNDORF. 16 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 7630/68. Heading AST. A mechanical respiratory ventilator comprises an adapter 124 to supply gas to a patient and connected to a bellows 28, means for delivering gas to the bellows, means 91 for nebulizing the gas with a liquid, and means for causing the bellows to contract so as to force gas into the patient. The ventilator may also include means 37 for adjusting the size to which the bellows can be expanded so that a controlled tidal volume of gas is supplied to the patient. As shown, the ventilator comprises a control unit 51 which, while the patient breathes out through the adapter 124 and an exhalation valve 132, supplies oxygen (at a rate determined by an adjustment 90) through a line 88 and a nebulizer 91 into the expanding bellows 28. Air drawn in through a valve 107 may be added to the oxygen, and the nebulizer, which has a member 97 on which entrained liquid is broken into particles of 0.5 microns, may add water and optionally also a medicament to the breathing gas. A member 37, 43, which is adjustable in its position, limits the expansion of the bellows so that the volume of gas supplied to the patient may be pre-determined. The exhalation phase is concluded when gas pressure (under the control of a timer knob 62) moves a diaphragm 64 and member 66 so that the gas may reach a junction 71 and act on a diaphragm 69 to close a valve 86 in the gas supply line 88. Inspiration is then caused by gas passing from the junction 71 through a line 138 and a venturi assembly 141 (where it is mixed with air) into the transparent calibrated canister 23 surrounding the bellows so that the bellows are forced to contract and expel gas to the patient. During inspiration, gas pressure through a line 138, 136 holds the exhalation valve 132 closed. Inspiration is concluded (under the control of a timer knob 73) when gas pressure on a diaphragm 76 opens a valve 82 to atmosphere so that the pressure on the diaphragm 64 is relieved and the valve member 66 closes allowing the valve 86 to reopen. A manometer 31 is provided.
