Abstract
1,094,370. Artificial respiration apparatus. F. M. BIRD and H. L. POHNDORF. July 12, 1966 [Aug. 2, 1965], No. 31253/66. Heading A5T. An artificial respiration apparatus as illustrated with reference to Fig. 1, has an inhalation phase and an exhalation phase in its operative cycle (operation by controller 11 and control cartridge 21), a patient adapter 26 for connection to the airway of a patient, means 24 for supplying inhalant gases under positive pressure to the patient adapter and to the patient's airway, and exhalation valve means 23 connected to the patient adapter and to the patient's airway, said exhalation valve means including a body having a venturi-like passage 137 therein, means connecting one end of the passage to the adapter (at 172) the other end of said passage being open to the atmosphere, a nozzle 151 on the body and facing the said other end of the passage and means 166, 152 for suppling gas under positive pressure to said nozzle during the inhalation phase to cause a jet of gas to travel from the nozzle down the passage in a direction towards said one end of the passage to cause air from the atmosphere to be entrained and to pass through said passage during inspiration. An additional nozzle 161 may be mounted on said body facing said said one end of the passage with means 162, 171 being provided for supplying gas under pressure to said additional nozzle during. the exhalation phase, thereby aspirating the gases in the airway of the patient.
