Abstract

1432767 Breathing apparatus E GARDEN 8 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39621/72 Heading A5T An anaesthetists ventilator comprises a cylinder 28 adapted for connection to an Ayres T-piece 38, and having one or more vents 92 connecting its interior to atmosphere, and a piston 98 reciprocated in the cylinder by drive means 108 to open the vent(s) 92 so that gas supplied through tube 40 and expired air from the patient can pass out of the ventilator or to close the vent(s) so that the gas passes to the patient through a mouthpiece 42 or tracheal tube. The vents 92 communicate with a groove 94 around cylinder 28 and a vent pipe 96. The drive means 108 is a vacuum-operated motor and comprises a spindle 110 on which is fixed an arm 112 which oscillates when vacuum is applied to motor 108 through connection 158 to reciprocate piston rod 100. Motor 108 is mounted on a plate 104 which is adjustable along guideways 106 so that piston rod 100 is also adjustable to permit variation of the relative periods during which vents 92 are closed and open to the patient and hence variation of the inspiration and expiration ratio. This ratio is indicated by a scale located on a cover 24 of the apparatus. A port 48 in the cylinder communicates with a safety valve 58. To aid expiration a venturi may be connected between respiratory tube 34 and T-piece 38, the jet of the venturi supplying the gas and being directed towards the cylinder. In a further modification the venturi and jet are reversed whereby positive pressure in the expiratory phase of operation is assured.
