768,865. Respirators. BERGE, G. Jan. 13, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1101/55. Class 81(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] An open circuit respirator comprises a container for compressed breathable gas in a form generated by a closed curve moving along a directrix of such a shape that the container surrounds at least in part a free space for the location of a pressure regulator. A compressed air container 1 of toric shape is supported in a ventral position on the wearer and has a filling valve 3 and a tube 4 connecting it to a regulator 2. A plate 16 is located over the container 1 and the regulator 2. A breathing pipe 7 connects the regulator 2 to a mouthpiece 8. A pipe 10 within the breathing pipe 7 leads to the mouthpiece 8 and is provided with openings 12. Air from the regulator 2 passes on inhaling through a space between the pipes 7, 10, through the holes 12 into the inner pipe 10 and to the mouthpiece 8. Expired air pases into the space and out of the apparatus via a one-way valve 15. In an alternative construction (not shown), the compressed gas container is U-shaped. Separate inhaling and exhaling pipes may be provided between the mouthpiece and the regulator. A pipe 14 may also be provided to connect the mouthpiece 8 directly with the atmosphere, rotation of a three-way cock 13 enabling air from either the atmossphere or the container to reach the mouthpiece 8.
