Abstract

293,900. Davis, R. W. G., and Siebe, Gorman, & Co., Ltd. April 14, 1927. Respirators.-In breathing apparatus for use at high altitudes in which oxygen or air under pressure is supplied from a cylinder a to a breathing bag e through a spring-loaded valve opened by levers f on collapse of the bag during inhalation, atmospheric air is admitted to the bag through a branch pipe c<2> controlled by a manually adjusted rotary valve l adapted to cover, more or less, a V-shaped air inlet. Alternatively the valve may be controlled automatically by an evacuated aneroid chamber. The valve in this case is a cylindrical slide valve working over a V-shaped slot in the air inlet pipe. The inhaled air passes into the mask h through an automatic valve at i and the exhaled air passes to atmosphere through an automatic valve j. A hand-operated bye-pass valve connecting the cylinder a directly to the breathing tube may be provided. The bag e may be made or covered with goldbeater's skin or of suitably treated leather in order to withstand low temperatures.
