Abstract

815,870. Respiratory apparatus. AIRSHIELDS Inc. April 17, 1957 [April 27, 1956], No. 12510/57. Class 81 (2). Anµsthetic apparatus in which a variable volume device with flexible walls is connected in the breathing circuit of an anµsthetic machine, the flexible walls being exposed in a variable pressure chamber to alternating negative and positive pressures, has a relief valve for allowing anµsthetic gas to pass from the variable volume device to the chamber when the pressure in the variable volume device exceeds that in the chamber by a predetermined amount, the relief valve comprising a closure member sealed by its weight on a valve seating and subjected from above to the pressure in the chamber and from below to the pressure in the variable volume device. A breathing bag 9 of the anµsthetic apparatus is located in a transparent chamber 10 in which alternating positive and negative pressures are produced by a bellows 12 operated by driving means and tuning mechanism (not shown). The chamber 10 has relief valves 14, 15 controlling the maximum positive and negative pressures respectively, in the chamber 10. Anµsthetic gas leaving the bag 9 passes to the patient through a duct 8. Between the bag 9 and the duct 8 is an assembly comprising a cover 22 mounted on a ring 20 supported by tubes 21 connecting a small chamber 23 below the cover 22 with the chamber 10. A disc 24 normally supported by the ring 20, separates the bag 9 from the small chamber 23. Normally, gas passes around the assembly between the bag 9 and the duct 8, but in the event of anµsthetic gas pressure in the breathing bag 9 exceeding the pressure in the chamber 10 by a predetermined amount, e.g. 1 cm. of water, the disc 24 is lifted to vent anµsthetic gas from the bag 9 to the chamber 10. A second breathing bag 5 for manual or emergency use is provided, a valve 7 serving to disconnect one of the bags 5, 9 from the anµsthetic circuit. Specification 781,747 is referred to.
