Abstract

1,175,604. Respiratory gas regulators. SOC. DE FABRICATION D'INSTRUMENTS DE MESURE. 17 March, 1967 [18 March, 1966], No. 12734/67. Heading AST. [Also in Division F2] A device for varying the rate of supply of gas from a source (e.g. the atmosphere) to a duct 5 includes a member housed in a chamber 2 communicating with the source and arranged to vary the degree of closure of an inlet 20 to the duct in dependence upon the pressure within the chamber, the member being an elastically deformable flexible diaphragm 16 closing a gas filled cavity 15, the diagram being arranged in front of the inlet to expand towards the inlet as the pressure in the chamber falls and thereby progressively cover the inlet. As shown, the device is provided in a demand regulator for an aviator which supplies to the aviator a mixture of air and oxygen, the oxygen (denoted by heavy lined arrows) being available in known manner when inhalation opens a bellows (8) controlled valve (7). The cavity 15 in the device contains air at the atmospheric air prevailing on the ground and when the aviator ascends the diaphragm 16 progressively restricts the intake of air from the atmosphere through the inlet 20 into the breathing gas mixture. The diaphragm 16 is of silicone rubber or latex and the cylindrical member 13 providing the cavity 15 is screwthreaded at 21, 22 into the housing of the regulator.
