Abstract

1,086,761. Breathing apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Feb. 9, 1966 [Feb. 25, 1965], No. 5627/66. Heading A5T. [Also in Divisions B7 and E1] An underwater breathing apparatus, as may be illustrated with reference to Figs. 1 and 8, comprises first 20 and second 21 breathing bags, inlet and outlet valve means communicating with the breathing bags, inlet 25 and outlet 26 conduits for connection to a breathable gas source and a suction source in 10, said inlet valve being responsive to contraction of the first bag for connecting same to the inlet conduit and allowing breathable gas to enter said first bag, said outlet valve being responsive to expansion of the second bag for connecting same to the outlet conduit and allowing gas to exit from said second bag, and passageway means 29 including oneway check valve means connected between the bags and communicating with the user, said inlet and outlet valves being constructed to insure that the outlet valve is closed when the inlet valve' is open and vice versa. In use, an underwater living quarters 10 includes an oxygen tank 136 and a pump 141 with pressure and suction sides. The breathable gas is supplied to the diver by conduit 25, inlet valve 145, bag 20 and passageway 29. The exhaled air is returned by bag 21, valve 149, and conduit 26. The apparatus of the invention provides a closed circuit system wherein a diver may be supplied from a source not carried by the diver and wherein breathable gas does not by-pass the diver due to pressure differentials. The inlet and outlet valves are described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
