Abstract

531,962. Life preserver belts. PETERSON, G. J. July 8, 1939, No. 19931. [Class 77] An inflatable life preserving belt 20, Fig. 2, comprises a fastening buckle 30 adapted to contain a compressed gas cartridge 46 and provided with a socket member 38 communicating with the interior of the belt and making a gas-tight fit by the aid of a rubber collar 39 with the neck of the cartridge. The cartridge is pierced by a pin 42 mounted on a lever 52 arranged inside the belt when it is desired to inflate the belt. The belt is provided with a take-up device, Figs. 8, 9 and 10, consisting of a rectangular frame 64 with pivotally mounted end members 80 which, when the belt is deflated, engage with catches 76 on a U-shaped member 68 secured to the frame 64. The belt is threaded through the take-up device, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and when the belt is inflated the catches are released and the belt allowed to extend. Fig. 17 shows a modification in which the cartridge 120 is supported in a member 106 provided with a rubber lined socket for receiving the neck 122 of the cartridge. The cartridge is pierced by a pin 116 mounted on a spring-pressed lever 114 pivoted to the socket. The belt may be accordion pleated and made of rubber or of fabric lined with rubber.
