[Class 23] In a centrifugal separator having peripheral sludge discharge openings 8 closed by a fluid actuated ring piston 9, a valve member 16 for discharge of the actuating fluid is connected to members 13 ... 21 which, during rotation of the separator, substantially counteract the centrifugal force acting on the valve member. Actuating fluid is supplied to a chamber 14 below the piston by means of a stationary pipe 11. The chamber 14 is connected to a further chamber 27 containing the valve member and communicating with the periphery of the separator bowl. The members 18 . . . 21 also form part of a linkage operating the valve member, the member 21 being a loosely fitting piston sliding within a chamber 22 supplied with liquid from a statonary pipe 23. The conical valve member 16 may be replaced by a sliding valve.
