Abstract

641,382. Centrifugal-separators. NYROP, A. Feb. 6, 1948, Nos. 3529 and 3530. Convention dates, May 5, 1947, and Feb. 2, 1948. [Class 23] In a centrifugalseparator comprising a rotary bowl 52, 53 having a discharge opening 54 for the separated denser material, and a stationary casing 50, 51 enclosing the bowl and having a collecting chamber 63 with a circumferential inlet 65 for the separated material, the space 67, 68 between the bowl and casing is filled with fluid under pressure and the distance between the bowl and casing is small in the vicinity of the discharge opening. The fluid is supplied by pipes 69, 70, and may be a cleaning fluid which enters the bowl through holes 72, 73 and the opening 54. The bowl, supported and driven from a shaft 57, is charged by a pipe 61. The treated material is discharged through a pipe 80 by an impeller 59 on the shaft. The inlet 65 has vanes 64 which prevent swirl in the collecting chamber. In a modification, Fig. 2, the bowl is rotated and supported by one end of a hollow horizontal shaft 3 which serves as a discharge for the treated material. The collecting chamber 9 is annular, and coplanar with the opening 7 for separated denser material. The interior of the bowl is divided by two sets of conical discs 14, 15 which may be axially displaced to form closed compartments. Alternatively, pipes 18 bridge the spaces between the discs to form passages for the treated material. The separation may be assisted by giving the discs or other parts of the separator an electrical potential different from that of the material under treatment, and internal parts of the separator may be of non-corrosive material. The separator may be used for the purification of water, sugar-juice, oils and gases, and for the treatment of mixtures which combine or react whilst in the separator.
