Abstract

312,271. Jungblutt, G. May 23, 1928, [Convention date]. Centrifugal separators.-The rapidly rotating fluid inside a centrifugal separator communicates with surrounding fluid and particles to be separated are thrown out by centrifugal force to the surrounding fluid. The rotor R of the machine is mounted on the shaft 1, and consists of a series of rings 4 of triangular section separated by thin slots and connected by longitudinal ribs 6. The cylinder thus formed is secured to end bosses 7, and contains a longitudinal tube 8 carrying radial blades 9 which reach nearly to the cylinder. A fixed chamber 12 is arranged outside the rotor, and terminates in a funnel 14 provided with a rotary valve 15 for permitting the removal of the separated particles. The mixture is supplied through the channel 17 and passes through openings in the end bosses 7 into the rotor. The blades 9 ensure the rapid rotation of the fluid, and some of the fluid passes into the casing 12. When the pressure in the casing is the same as in the rotor, the flow of fluid through the slots stops, but the solid particles continue to pass outwards through the slots, and collect in the casing 12. The purified liquid passes on and is discharged through the pipe 18. In a modification an auxiliary circuit is arranged to maintain a constant flow of fluid through the rotor R, the casing 12 and an auxiliary separator.
