Abstract

469,338. Centrifugal separators. FAWCETT, H. W. Feb. 28, 1936, No. 6085. [Class 23] The bowl 1 of a centrifugal separator has peripheral sludge discharge apertures 6 controlled by valves 7 constrained by springs 15. The diameter of each aperture 6 is not less than one-eightieth of the maximum internal diameter of the bowl, and the product obtained by multiplying the weight of the liquid displaced by the valve and its spring by the mean centrifugal force operating at the valve, is not more than ten times the unbalanced liquid pressure acting on the valve when closed while the bowl is full and running at normal speed. The valve has a stem 8 with a spider 9 at its inner end working over two or more guides 11 projecting from a ring 12 in which a nozzle 13 with an aperture 6 is supported. The spring 15 is placed between the spider 12 and a ring 14 resting against shoulders on the guides 11.
